19th annual Kawaihae Canoe Club luau

The Kawaihae Canoe Club will host its 19th annual luau at 5:30 p.m. Nov.23 at the Kawaihae Small Boat Harbor.

The event is a fundraiser to support club activities and to perpetuate the values, practices and hard work involved in Hawaiian canoe paddling.

General seating presale tickets for adults are $40; $50 reserved seating. Tickets are $15 for children younger than 10. The event is casual dress and all are welcome.

Hawaii Cycling Club offers group rides

The Hawaii Cycling Club hosts classes for beginning and intermediate bicyclists Saturdays at Old Kona Airport Park.

Each group is led by an experienced HCC member who maintains a pace appropriate for each group, keeping riders together and providing instruction.

Cyclists meet in the parking lot at 6:55 a.m. Riders generally travel north on Queen Kaahumanu Highway.

Beginners ride 10 to 12 miles with as many as three stops.

The intermediate group rides 36 miles with stops at the West Hawaii Veterans Cemetery, the scenic overlook on Queen Kaahumanu Highway and Kua Bay.

Horseshoe club hosts Turkey Toss Holiday Tournament

The Kona Horseshoe Pitchers Club will hold its annual Turkey Toss Holiday Tournament at 8 a.m. Nov. 23 at the Palm Court horseshoe pits behind the tennis courts at the Old Kona Airport Park.

This nonsanctioned event is open to all competitors.

Two person teams will be divided into A and B divisions and cash card awards will be given to teams in both divisions.

Entry fee is $10 per player. Entries will be accepted at 4 p.m. Thursday at the Palm Courts. The deadline to sign up is Saturday.

Wobble Gobble set for Thanksgiving Day

Big Island Running Company will host the ninth annual Walua Road Wobble Gobble fun run and walk at 8 a.m. Thanksgiving Day, Nov. 28. The event starts at the Walua Road trailhead on Lako Street, mauka of the Chevron gas station.

Participants may run or walk a 1-mile, 3.5-mile or 6.4-mile course.

The event is free, but participants are asked to each donate two cans of food to the Hawaii Food Bank. Volunteer help and postrace refreshment donations are also welcome.

Kona Sailing Club annual Wahine Regatta

Kona Sailing Club will host its 21st annual Wahine Sailing Weekend Saturday and Sunday at Honokohau Small Boat Harbor.

Registration for a clinic led by female champion sailor Jennifer Gillette begins at 9 a.m. Saturday.

Kona Sailing Club skippers will share their boats for an on-the-water practice following the clinic until 3 p.m. The cost for the clinic is $10 for club members; $15 nonmembers.

Skipper and crew meetings begin at 9:30 a.m. Sunday. Races begin at 11:50 a.m.

Wahine will sail two races and end the afternoon with heavy pupu and an awards celebration at the clubhouse.

Manzo of Bike Works to appear on Gail Show

Jeff Manzo of Bike Works Beach and Sport is a guest on the Emily T Gail Show. Jeff will share information about the First Friday Waikoloa Village Night Ride planned for 8:30 p.m. Dec. 6.

He will also discuss community bike rides which begin at 8:30 a.m. Tuesdays at Bike Works at Queens’ MarketPlace.

Gail will speak about the Mauna Kea Polo Club which competes Sundays at Waikii Ranch.

Parks and Recreation plans youth basketball league

The Hawaii County Department of Parks and Recreation will hold a basketball league for children ages 9 to 14. League play is scheduled from Jan. 27 to March 13. Games will begin at 5 p.m. Mondays and Thursdays.

The league is also looking for volunteer coaches and officials.

Registration forms are available between 12:30 and 2:30 p.m. Monday through Thursday at the Kekuaokalani Gymnasium.

Waimea tee ball and coach pitch season

Parks and Recreation Waimea, in partnership with Waimea Athletics, will host a coaches meeting Nov. 19 at the Waimea Community Center. All coaches are asked to attend.

Player registration will be $40, which includes uniform, hat, ball and team equipment. Sign up between 11 a.m. and 2 p.m., Monday through Thursday, Nov. 27 to Dec. 14, at Waimea Community Center.
